How It Started
In early 2020s, I regularly posted doodles and flash fiction to Art Union, a Discord art server, for their daily challenges. As a personal flair, I did different themes monthly, decided from keyword suggestions by fellow AUnioners before each month.For December 2021, the theme I settled on was pear + polar bear, so I created a character that the daily doodles would centre on.

Thus, Polpebear was born.Over time and well beyond December that year, they developed into a distinct character that I still enjoy drawing.Later on, I fleshed out more characters as friends for Polpebear, each with a fruit and animal theme.

Polpebear is the chill polar pear bear.

Polpebear's name stems from Polar Pear Bear. Visually, they're a hybrid of polar bear and pear. They're chill and tend to go with the flow. Sometimes, they wonder if they're more bear or pear.

Monyis is the merry mangosteen monkey.

Monyis is the merry mangosteen monkey. His name is derived from the alliterating 'monyet manggis manis'. If there's fun to be had, he'll be there with his hat.

Roxie is the nosey rose apple bear

While Nosey Roxie is similarly shaped to Polpebear, she's not a pear but a rose apple (jambu). Bear in mind that she's as nosey as she's rosy, so her eyes are peeled for some juicy tea.

Jago is the corny corn dog

Jago is a buff corn dog with abs of steel corn kernels. His name combines 'jagung' 'doggo' while also being the word 'jago' (ace/ expert). He's corny and a bit of a clown, but when it matters he'll lend you an ear (of corn).

Technically, it started on 30 Nov as I had each month's theme hand the baton to the next theme on the last day of the month. I hadn't designed Polpebear at this point so the visual description here was vastly different from what Polpebear was to become.For context, the theme for November was a rather rude and edgy turkey character
